Who's up for New Year in Penzance?

The primary reason for this quick post is to gauge opinion on the tricky Cornish away trip, this year scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend, currently a Saturday 3pm kick-off on 2nd January. Last time around Warriors attracted huge travelling support with over a thousand fans watching an assured Bonus Point win, as well as some peculiar antics from the Pirates' coaching team. The vast majority attended under their own steam and most made a long weekend of it, with relatively clement spring weather in the ascendency. WWST did take a coach down but numbers were poor and we were resigned early on to making a substantial loss. Despite Commandery Coaches freezing their prices for this season we will be looking at a potential bill of around £1600 for the two day journey. Realistically we need around 40 people to commit to the coach if we are to make the trip viable.

Given the time of year, with family and work events often taking precedence, we have the feeling that take up for coach travel would be poor. This was reflected in the informal survey amongst travellers to Ampthill at the weekend. However, if there is sufficient demand, we will happily organise transport, using a similar recipe to last season - ie travelling down early on the morning of Saturday 2nd and returning after a relaxed breakfast the following day (Sunday 3rd). Tickets (for coach travel only) would be in the region of £40-50pp depending on demand.

Please could you indicate below if you would like to commit to coach travel? If there is sufficient interest, tickets will be advertised next weekend and confirmation of our commitment to putting on the coach (or not) would be broadcast before the end of September, to enable people to make concrete plans.

Pre-Season Friendlies

On September 13th last year we took 3 full coaches to Dillingham Park for the club's first fixture in three years. We were never likely to match those numbers this year given the different circumstances and also the fact that we are still in full-on holiday season. Nevertheless a sold-out WWST coach made the journey to Bedfordshire on Saturday, despite the pretty atrocious weather conditions. There weren't quite so many Warriors supporters in evidence on the natural Ampthill terraces but we'd estimate around 250 in total made the journey. It was an ideal opportunity to test out my new VX3 puffer coat which, I'm pleased to say, passed the waterproofing test with flying colours.

Whilst the beer and burgers hit the heights of last season the teams on the pitch struggled to match the quality of fare on offer. The pluses include:

• A largely solid defensive showing from Warriors

• The blooding of most of our new recruits, including many of the younger players

• Well-worked tries from Kofi Cripps and James Cherry

• Exploration of many new combinations, particularly the all-important 9/10 partnership

The obvious negative was losing the match, but we all know that pre-season results are rarely of much relevance. A potentially much more worrying issue was the loss of Charlie Chapman to what seemed to be a significant injury. Charlie looked sharp in his time on the pitch and would have definitely appeared in the plus column had he not been stretchered off. Mutterings of a groin injury were heard post-match but it didn't have the appearance of a soft-tissue problem. Hopefully Matt Everard will be good to his word at the open training and provide supporters with an injury update in the coming days.

This weekend, we take on Cardiff at Sixways. The game is included in your Season Ticket but, if you are yet to purchase one, there are still seats available in the peripheral blocks of the Cecil Duckworth Stand. We understand that the South Stand will not be open for this fixture. Please buy your tickets here. The WWST cabin will remain in its usual position for this game, prior to finding a new home before the league commences on September 19th. Do pay us a visit prior to the match - we will be open between around 1.30pm and 2.45pm.
